I needed a way to hardwire my work computer when WiFi was the only thing available. This was perfect! I’m so happy that I found this! It was everything I needed. Simple to use, easy setup, did not require often reboots or anything else. It was easy to take from one place to another.

Preis / Leistung Top.

This won’t be everyone’s use case, but someone out there will be in the same boat. I picked up the Opal not for travelling, but to spin up a NAT’d guest network at home. My main network is basically a home-lab ecosystem, and the last thing I want is visitors connecting their random devices directly to it. The Opal gives them a normal, no-nonsense Wi-Fi experience without me having to collect MAC addresses or fight with whitelists.Setup was straightforward. I put it on its own subnet, plugged the WAN port into my main network, and it was up. At first it treated my LAN like the public internet, but the router is way more configurable than its price suggests. You can SSH into it, tweak IPTables, block inter-subnet access, and even enable an advanced control panel module straight from the web interface. It’s essentially a cut-down Linux box with a friendly skin on top.A genuinely nice touch is the hardware switch for its VPN client. The router can connect to a VPN server and push all guest traffic through it, and you can toggle this on and off on the side of the unit. Useful in the UK, where half the internet wants you to upload your passport for reasons unknown. The one real snag was OpenVPN performance. Without tunnelling, I was getting around 250 Mbps on 5 GHz. The moment OpenVPN client was enabled, speeds dropped to single digits, around 5–7 Mbps. It’s not the router’s fault; OpenVPN is single-threaded and the Opal’s CPU just doesn’t have the grunt for heavy crypto. It routes traffic fine, but encrypting it is another matter.WireGuard was the fix. After spinning up a WireGuard server remotely, the Opal managed around 50–60 Mbps through the tunnel, which is more than enough for guests to browse and stream. I suspect the higher-end GL.iNet models would perform better here simply because of the upgraded CPUs.Overall, I’m happy with it. It’s a small, cheap, surprisingly capable router that’s perfect for experiments, side networks, labs, and guest isolation. If that’s your type of setup, it’ll probably slot in nicely.

I put one of these in the cab of my RV on the ceiling and had it powered on 24/7 for about 2 years straight. It was repeating WiFi and had about 10 IoT devices (including a home assistant server) communicating constantly with each other. The cab reaches temperatures well above 140 degrees F (repeatedly) in the summer when parked and below 14F in the winter.I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. While I would have loved it to last longer, it proved to be resilient--especially for the price. I will be buying another one.WiFi range for the repeating function could be better and is sensitive to even pretty benign obstructions. My guess is it lacks beam-forming functions when repeating which kinda makes sense. It doesn't do a consistent job of automatically re-connecting to known WiFi signals if it gets kicked off. It is infinitely configurable. I modified the MTU to speed up cellular tethering bandwidth.

These things are handy for travel. Small, easy to throw in your bag, and will run off of a USB-A port. I ding it one star because the software and GUI are less than awesome. It's simple and usable, but sometimes you wish you could do just a little bit more. Also has a habit of mangling its own config every six months or so, and you have to do a factory reset and reconfigure it from scratch. That being said, it does work and it's pretty handy to have while traveling. Oh, and it supports common ipsec and wireguard VPNs.

Earlier this year, I purchased a travel router with the goal of being able to connect to my home network while traveling abroad. After several unsuccessful attempts to set it up over the next few months, I grew increasingly disappointed and worried that I wouldn’t have it ready in time for my upcoming trip to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.Fortunately, when I reached out to the GL.iNet Customer Support team, I received a prompt and helpful email with detailed setup instructions. Although I still had trouble getting everything connected, the message also included a link to schedule a call with a support representative.I set up an appointment and was connected with Barry—an exceptionally knowledgeable, friendly, patient, and capable representative. Over the course of two separate calls on two different days, Barry guided me step-by-step through the configuration, updates, and profile setup for both my SLFT1200 and MT3000 routers. Despite technical issues with screen sharing and multiple attempts to troubleshoot, Barry remained patient, reassuring, and determined to help me succeed. Thanks to Barry’s outstanding support, everything is now fully set up and working perfectly. I cannot express enough how grateful I am for the tremendous customer service I received. It is refreshing to experience such dedication, professionalism, and genuine care.My thanks to Barry for providing support that truly stands out.

The dual-band capability ensures minimal interference and maximized speed, making it suitable for streaming, online gaming, and heavy browsing.SecurityOne of the most notable features of this router is its emphasis on security. It supports multiple VPN protocols (OpenVPN, WireGuard), which helps maintain privacy and protect data while connected to public WiFi networks. This makes it an excellent choice for business travelers and those concerned about cybersecurity.PortabilityThe GL-SFT1200 is compact and lightweight, making it highly portable. Its small size allows it to fit easily into a bag or even a pocket, making it a convenient companion for travelers. Despite its compact design, it doesn't compromise on performance or features.Ease of UseThanks to the user-friendly interface, setting up the router is straightforward. This is particularly useful in hotel rooms or conference centers where wired connections may be more reliable or necessary. The Gigabit ports ensure that you can maximize your internet speed without bottlenecks.Value for MoneyGiven its performance, security features, and portability, the GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 offers excellent value for money. It's competitively priced and provides features that are typically found in higher-end models. Its robust security and ease of use make it a worthwhile investment for anyone needing reliable internet access while traveling.ConclusionThe GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 (Opal) Secure Travel WiFi Router is a powerful, secure, and portable solution for travelers.
