Best around…. Good tasting water… easy to rinse… must be stored moist is the only downside but that is because it’s so good (don’t want those 0.2 micron holes sticking close). See company website or pamphlet for specifics.
I bought this item for group trips in the Scottish highlands it works brilliantly
This things is awesome. Best filter I have owned. It’s pricey but worth the money for the speed and effectiveness of the unit.
I used this daily to purify rusty, disgusting water from my tap. It really did purify the water adequately. I integrity tested the purifier frequently. I really loved it. I have a couple bits of feedback though: 1) Over time the dirty water bladder changes color, like there's some sort of chemical interaction that causes this. It might be after cleaning with bleach according to directions. 2) The only way my filter would work is if I left the dirty water bladder partially unsealed. When I made the bladder air tight, the filter never worked at all. I tested the bag against the rust colored water often, and the filter was working also after integrity tests. The most important question to ask yourself is this: Am I willing to place my life in the hands of this purifier if there are no other purification options (because this happens in austere environments) available? Always, always, always have a backup...critical redundancy is extremely important!
I lead outdoor education as a component of my professional life. Being able to generate this much potable water passively is a game changer. This is truly a massive technological leap forward in the field of water purification and is much better than similar competitors I have used. I look forward to seeing how durable this product is over the years. It has a lot of features that show how carefully considered its development was, and I suspect that durability won’t be an issue as it has already held up well over multiple backpacking trips and a couple thousand liters.
I've had the privilege of using this water filter on two extended camping trips, one with a single companion and the other with a group of four friends, where this filter served as our primary water source. Filtering an impressive 20-30 liters per day, this review reflects my extensive experience with this filter. Here's what makes it my favorite water filter and why it might be yours too:The Good:Exceptional Filtration: This filter boasts a remarkable filtration capability of 0.02 microns, surpassing most filters on the market by tenfold. It provides peace of mind by effectively removing even the tiniest contaminants.Effortless Purge Function: The user-friendly purge function is highly effective in restoring water flow. A quick and easy solution to maintain peak performance in the field.Swift Operation: With occasional use of the purge valve (around every 10 liters), the filter maintains a commendable fill rate. We effortlessly filled our 32-ounce bottles in just a matter of minutes.Generous Capacity: Holding up to 10 liters of water, this filter reduces the need for frequent trips to the water source, making it exceptionally convenient for groups and extended outings.Customizable Height: The filter's adjustable height is a thoughtful feature, allowing you to tailor it to your specific needs. Trimming the hoses for your typical scenarios is advisable, as they come quite long from the factory.Durability: This filter has proven to be more durable than expected, enduring the rigors of camping life. The Bad:Pricey Investment: It's worth noting that this filter comes with a relatively high price tag of around $300. While the cost may be a deterrent for some, it's important to consider the long-term benefits and warranty.Weight Considerations: Weighing approximately 1.25 pounds, this filter is on the heavier side compared to some alternatives. Keep this in mind if you prioritize lightweight gear for your trips.Durability Concerns: Although it has held up well so far, some concerns about potential tearing exist, especially when hanging 10 liters at a time. However, the filter is backed by a 3-year warranty, and MSR appears to be a reputable company known for supporting its customers. In Conclusion:For the "Good" reasons outlined above, this water filter has earned its place as a top choice in my camping gear. In regions like Hawaii, where there's a risk of diseases like leptospirosis, the ultra-fine filtration capability provides valuable protection. While the initial cost and weight are factors to consider, the filter's stellar performance and robust warranty make it a worthwhile investment. My primary concern is its long-term durability, but with MSR's track record and the flexibility of warranty coverage, I remain confident in this filter as my trusted companion for clean water in the wilderness.
The water tastes great and after a couple of times filtering the water, it is easy and handy to use. It is light to carry and will always be a part of my camping tools.
Once I get enough friends to need 10l of water at one time, I’m sure I will be the talk around the fire. I bought because I over prepare. Better to have 10l of water to use than the 1 gallon you need. Empty weight is negligible. You have the capacity to filter and purify 10l. Not sure of taste as I haven’t needed to use it yet. But I’m sure it tastes just like the rest of them. Plasticky
Five stars for product, but net one star for customer service.I've been using the Guardian for over two years of travel. Its duty cycle is 3,000 liters, but there's no way to tell, that I know of, whether the filter has passed its duty cycle. I reached out to customer support and they replied with instructions on how to sterilize the filter. When I pointed out that they hadn't answered my question they told me that they had and then ghosted me, despite my asking, multiple times, politely, to be escalated. Also, the strap on the bag has started to come loose, so I'm worried about that coming off while the bag is hanging full of water. Their reply was basically, "Dude, that sucks." In a follow up message I asked what should be done about it and they never answered or provided any support options at all.The Guardian is an expensive, high-quality product that is completely undermined by the absolute worst customer support I have ever received. I am replacing it with a LifeStraw Ultrafilter, which is less expensive and produced by a company with a good customer service reputation. I will never by another product produced by Cascade. The picture, btw, is of the strap coming undone from the bag.
Works well, but proper cleaning for storage is a pain. I don’t know of anything better on the market, so I think this is as good as it gets.
