Let the treasure hunting begin! Use the Thames & Kosmos Metal Detector to detect metal objects — like gold, silver, iron, copper, and more — that are buried up to six inches deep in sand, dirt, or grass. The integrated digital display provides visual feedback as you home in on a metal object and emits a clear “beep” when you find your mark. Quickly and easily adjust the angle of the metal detector to explore between rocks, under bushes, and other hard-to-reach places. With two handles of different lengths and a lightweight design, this is the perfect exploration tool for kids (and adults!) of all ages.
I ordered for grandson's . It's ok but not very strong
This is made very cheaply of plastic. It says there is metal in the ground, but I sure couldn't find it.
My kids love their metal detectors it is super easy to use and finds metal without a failure. We took it to the beach and they had a blast finding little “treasures”.It is very lightweight and easy to carry around. And it can be taken apart for easy storage.I personally love the plain design, marking the hunt the focus. All in all, well worth getting!
I don't have any experience with other metal detectors so I don't have much to compare to. What I can say is that I used it to look around my house for nails the roofers left behind when they were here last week. I "found" a lot of large metal things, like my metal stock tank tub and a metal trellis and a metal children's toy... But ironically I visually spotted a tiny roofing nail in a piece of plastic and for some reason that didn't set the thing off even when I went right over it. So it clearly detects some metal, but I'll need to do some additional testing by throwing out some small metal things in the yard. Paperclips or something. Might be a size or mass thing, who knows. Maybe the plastic blocked it.Regardless, I think we'll have fun with it with the kids. Just as a note, it requires a nine volt battery. We accidently left it on outside for like 6 hours today and it said "low battery" by the time I discovered it., but the screen was active the whole time so that's probably not too surprising. Oh also I like that it came with a kid sized length attachment and adult sized option.
We have never taking up metal detecting as a hobby, so this was our first experience using a metal detector. This metal detector is definitely child sized. It was the perfect size for our 10-year-old son, so it should work for any elementary aged student. The length is adjustable to get a perfect fit. Setup was straightforward using the included instructions. This metal detector does really work. It makes an audible noise when it detects something. There is also a small lcd screen located near the bottom, but that screen is hard to see without bending over. For the price, this detector is a fair value since it really does work. It is a great gift to get a child outdoors. Overall, we are happy with this metal detector for kids.
This was the best entertainment at the beach for my 13 and 6 yo! We had the best time sweeping the sand, talking, finding random things- sadly no pirate treasure- but we did find some coins. If you follow the directions AND look at the picture on the front of the box it is easy to put together. It is super lightweight and easy to use - my 6 yo was a master after 1 hour. It was the best "toy" I got for the beach this year. It also has home uses as I used it after we had our roof redone and was able to find a lot of nails that had found little homes in the grass and cracks. Every kid that we let use it at the beach had a great time and even adults liked trying it. Its so easy to set up and learn - I am glad I found this metal detector- its a bucket list check for me !
My granddaughters, ages 8 and 5 absolutely loved looking for buried treasures using this Thames & Kosmos metal detector. It comes with 2 shafts, one is short at10.6" and second shift is slightly longer at 15.7". I have a metal detector myself so they were familiar with how to use one and they were thrilled that they now have one to use that is size and age appropriate. On their first trip out in my backyard they actually dug up an old horse shoe that I had never found with my own detector. The only complaint they had was it is not very loud when it detects metal as they are accustomed to mine making all kinds of noise. The 8 yr old kept having to tell the 5 year old to be quiet so she could hear it and I agree, it is difficult to hear. The entire unit is made of a lightweight pvc type plastic which makes it weight appropriate for it's intended age group and by educating the users that it is is to be used and maintained with care like any metal detector should be, and not used for batting practice, it hopefully will continue to be operational for years. The best part about this toy is that it encourages young children and their parent(s) to get outdoors and live their own adventure, and not sit around looking at a screen watching everyone else's adventures, which in my opinion, is PRICELESS. This is a teaching tool that I recommend.
