Samsung’s 40" Odyssey G7 Curved Gaming Monitor provides breathtaking realism for epic game play. The 40" 1000R curved display with its 21:9 screen and brilliant WUHD wraps around the field of vision for next-level gaming. VESA DisplayHDR™ 600 delivers more contrast, with deeper blacks and brighter whites for greater clarity even in dark scenes. 180Hz refresh rate and near-instant 1ms response time (GtG) minimizes lag for ultra-smooth gameplay. AMD FreeSync™ Premium Pro syncs the GPU and panel to reduce choppiness, screen lag, and image tears. Picture-by-Picture maximizes screen potential with a split screen to team up with friends, while Picture-in-Picture allows content management on a single screen. Auto Source Switch+ detects when connected devices are turned on and instantly switches to the new source signal. CoreSync technology with 16.7 million colors and CoreLighting+ project vibrant on-screen colors into the real world for a fully immersive experience. The ergonomic stand enables monitor tilt and height adjustment for optimal gaming comfort.
This monitor is exactly what I've been looking for to replace my 32 inch 4k dell. It's much sharper, the refresh rate is great and the curve is not too crazy like some other gaming monitors. I use it for work and sim racing. For gaming I have an RTX 4080 and it drives it well. One downside is the displaport being 1.4, but the HDMI 2.1 works well for the high resolution and refresh rate.Right now it's on promotion for 799 and that's the right price, maybe a little more is fine too, but not $1000 or the launch price.
Coming from a monoprice darkmatter 34in, this is a noticeable upgrade in every way. The colors and contrast still aren't IPS or OLED, but this is noticeably better than all my other VA panels. The image I shared looks a lot worse than to my eyes, but there's noticeable milky backlighting middle top right during black scenes in movies and tv shows that annoys me every once in a while.Other than that, running battlefield and marvel rivals is an amazingly smooth and beautiful experience. At the >$1k price range, I'd consider this a bit overpriced. That's gaming-OLED territory to me... Samsung g9 OLED at times, even.
The screen size and resolution is a very good match in my opinion. I currently use it with my MacBook Pro and so far I have nothing but good things to say about. Texts are very crisp and screen is big enough for watching movies or doing some light gaming. I mostly play grand strategy games from Paradox and some MMOs like WOW and ESO. The sheer size of the monitor and curve help greatly with immersion and my overall enjoyment of the games I play. The only problem I have so far is the sheer resolution makes it difficult to fully power it with my laptop's HDMI port at the advertised screen refresh rate. However, as of writing I have it running at 120hz and the screen flickers once a hour or more randomly. I think this is due to my own hardware limitation based on my research however so I won't deduct any stars for that. The monitor stand that it comes is more than adequate and the quality of the build can be better but nothing that would compromise the monitor is any major way. I hope if Samsung ever releases another version of this monitor they would add thunderbolt ports and a few more usb ports so that people won't need to buy a separate dock like some reviewers seem to do for their setups. Finally, I think this is a buy during a major sale generally the launch msrp is bit too high considering this is still a VA panel. There are a lot of OLEDS that can offer a better experience at a lower price for most people.
This product stopped working 1 month after I bought it. I got this on September 17th and it's currently October 26th. The backlight lights up but no image or menu from the monitor itself displays so you cannot reset it. I've unplugged it from power, tried different display cords, let it sit for an hour and nothing has fixed it. Absolutely outrageous for a $1,000 monitor to just stop working like that. Outrageous.
Excellent for day trading, perfect size for my desk
These are initial impressions after a few hours of use: picture and build quality are great. Bright and colorful. Text and images are crystal clear. Backlighting appears pretty even. Size is perfect for me coming from a 32" 4K monitor. Smaller widescreen monitors felt like they had been squashed vertically but this feels like I gained real estate. Hooked up with DisplayPort; no problems. Menus are easy to navigate and logical. Box was a bit awkward to handle but the monitor is pretty light - I could easily assemble and move it without help. Powertoys recommended to control the placement of windows. Gaming with an rtx 4090 and no problems driving this resolution.
The Samsung G7 is a powerful, beautiful monitor, and is fantastic for immersive games or streamedMovies and shows. As the specs show, you have great options for HDMI v DP. I have not used the speakers so in Windows I’ve disabled them so software doesn’t assume that’s my sound source. But I may need to rethink this—prob better than my current audio. Only had G7 for a few weeks so can’t comment on longevity but I recommend using screensaver since burnin is supposedly a possibility.
