I use a 3/0 EWG hook on my super fluke lures which I fish all year round. I normally buy a name brand that I will not mention here, but they are very expensive. I usually spend the extra for the name brand because I catch very hard fighting hybrid bass and striper on them and they have to hold up without bending out. I saw the price on these FishTrip hooks and couldn't pass up trying them out. I am very impressed, they are very sharp and extremely strong. I could not bend them out with just my hands. These hooks are made perfectly for an EWG, even the eyes are completely closed which you don't get on some of the others but really need because when fluke fishing the knot moves back and forth while working the lure and can get caught in the hook eye where it meets the other side of the hook and can cause the knot to break or completely slip off the hook.
I use these type hooks with plastic lures regularly, and like this shape. It seems to hold the plastic well, without bunching up if you pull it thru weeds underwater, etc.Its not easy to evaluate what makes one hook suprerior to another, unless you happen to be the guy that gets out and regularly and hooks monster bass that fight like crazy. Sadly, I don't fall into that category. What I can attest to is that the eyelet is just the right size to be able to thread the line through without being overly large.I also grabbed a pair of pliers to see if I could bend the hook. I could not. I'm sure that none of the fish I catch can put it thru such a test.In the end, these are a great price for so many hooks, and will likely last a LONG time.
At first glance, these hooks seemed fine. They come in a nice little reusable box and the 4/0 size seems to be similar to that of other 4/0 sizes I have bought. The gauge of the wire is medium to light which is a bit of a disappointment. The points and barbs are sharp. Upon a closer look there are a few red flags. The red coating is uneven on the wire indicates a lack of quality control. I already mentioned the relatively thin wire, but I found one brand new hook that was bent out of shape. Not sure how that made it through or how easy it is to bend but these are signs that make me not be able to recommend these.
