I had the chance to test out the Tenda AC1200 WiFi Router. Starting off with my overall impressions of the device, this is perfect for the every day user that simply wants to setup WiFi with no extra fuss.I tested this router on a dedicated circuit that can feed it with a full 2.5 gigabit connection to reduce bottlenecks. Overall the wired ethernet performance was decent and I was able to achieve a full 917 Mbps over ethernet. Over Wifi, I was seeing speeds around 450 Mbps 50 feet away in another room with two dry wall based walls between me and the router.Setup was easy. Plug it in, connect over wifi. Using a prompt in the Windows connection center (where you connect to WiFi) I was directed to setup the device in the web browser, then to set the connection type, and set the password for the device and off you go! I will add a caveat that once you set a password for the WiFi, you will need to wait a minute and then manually reconnect to the WiFi Router to be able to input the password and connect to the internet. For the generation of WiFi, I was sad not to see WPA3 included. The router can act as an Access Point to connect to an already existing wired network needing WiFi, a Repeater to extend the range of an already existing wireless network, or simply in standalone mode (default setting). The router can also be setup via Tenda WiFi as well. Sadly you cannot disable specific radios such as 2.4 or 5 GHz radios independently. The build of the router feels cheap but it makes sense considering that AC based WiFi has been out for a long while now and most AC router designs have been slowly simplified and have become more affordable to produce. This leads to lighter weight products that dont feel "premium". The antennas are pretty tall at roughly 206mm in height or 8.6 inches. The antennas are not removable. The lights can be disabled, which is nice considering the lights are bright and the WAN light constantly blinks when all is well. There are some security concerns that I would like to see eventually addressed. The first being that all passwords entered into the web setup page are clear text and are not hidden. The next is that a password is not needed for connecting to the router over WiFi for first time setup. These concerns alone are not going to lead to hackers breaking into your network but they can present some complications with setting up the device in the right circumstances. Like a child shoulder surfing and getting the password when your setting up the device or a neighbor connecting and setting up the device before you can from out of the box. These dont take away from the overall experience but something that will need to be considered.Overall, I can recommend this router if you want something that will simply work out of the box and that is easy to setup.

I have always had good results with this brand, and this router is no exception. While this model is AC1200 (wifi 5) not the cutting edge wifi 7, in my testing I was still able to stream 4k video on my laptop no problem. For most needs this is more than adequate, and the price is terrific.Build quality is solid as well and I found wjth the multiple adjustable antennas I was easily able to cover 2500sqft. The dual band feature also gives you both the faster speed of 5ghz as well as the longer distance of 2.4ghz.If you need a quality, general purpose router for home or office us, this is a great option!

First things first, this router works right out of the box, super easy to set up, quick to get up and running. So.... thats about it then..... Well, for me there were a couple concerning things and things I think could be better, but I could absolutely be wrong. Ive been a casual user of routers for quite a few years and have owned several in those years. Im kind of used to a more old-school user experience. This is not that. Before I even opened the box I noticed that Windows 11 isnt mentioned as one of the supported operating systems? Out of the box first thing I noticed is how lightweight this unit is. Could mean nothing at all, but to my old school sensibilities it just doesn't feel very durable, could be totally wrong though. Second thing I noticed was NO usb port. Again, nothing for most users, but I always prefer to have that option of a usb network connected device of some sort. Just me. My last concern is probably the biggest. The software. I'm VERY used to a more traditional browser interface with LOTS of tabs and options. The software here installs on your phone REALLY easily and controls things with a very simple and basic interface. For many this will be a godsend of simplicity, but for me its too simple with not enough control options. I dont feel I have enough info or enough control over my router. Probably just me though.I was VERY torn over just how to score this. As Ive said, I dont think Im the correct buyer for this router. To my old schools ways of seeing things there were a couple things that bothered me a bit. On the other hand though, its works really well right out of the box. Super easy to get going, works exactly as advertised and the price is even really good, very affordable, a very good value. I split the difference at 3 stars. Hopefully Ive been adequately clear why.
