was impressed with the design of this net, but it was a lot larger than I need for smaller fish. The net is HUGE, but I agree with the other reviewer I don't think the structure is strong enough for the size of the net. Good design for a smaller net.

This net is large, appropriate for up to 30" fish (and maybe even larger). Get this if you need something that will compact down for transportation and then extend to a long and large landing net. If I fished for gigantic beasts on a daily basis, I'd spend more and get something a little more solid. Since I am buying it for a week long trip to Pyramid Lake in NV and don't fish there that often, I'm pretty sure it's going to be fine. The netting is fairly soft so I believe this will work for catch and release. The locking mechanism that engages when you extend the net appears to be solid enough, but does not rigidly lock in place. There is a little wiggle to the net when opened and locked, however, I don't think this is going to affect it's operation.Very happy with this for the price.Update: 10-12-15: Went to Pyramid lake last week and had some epic fishing for huge trout in the 6-9lb range. This net worked flawlessly and the guide we hired for the first day was impressed by the functionality and low price. Still don't know if it will last a long time, but at this price, you can buy a few of them and throw them away if they break. BTW, the guide's equally function large net cost over $100.Update: 03-05-16: This net has worked flawlessly so far. Everyone wants to know where I got it and for how much. It's fun to see their jaws drop when I tell them: < $20. This is a wonderful bargain.

Being a commercial fish farm, we are rough on nets. We understand the limitations on light duty landing nets like these and this review is aimed at the average (consumer) user. Sometime our commercial duty nets (which weigh over 10 lb) are overkill for moving a few smaller fish. So we like to have these very light nets around for just that purpose. This landing net is sturdy and is a great value compared to what you will find in a brick and mortar store. We will not often use the collapsability feature, but is would be handy for storing in the boat or traveling. The 5/16" inch knotless nylon mesh is perfect for fingerlings and does not remove slime and scale like the knotted polyethelene mesh. Catfish and carp are the only fish that may get their spines caught in this mesh. The maximum fish weight I would recommend would be 5 lb.This mesh is also excellent for live-catch frogging. The bag is long enough to hold the frog and to keep it from jumping out. Being light and over 6 ft total length (extended) makes it almost perfect for nocturnal frogging. The limitations on this net is the non-rigid "leading edge" which is necessary to make this fully collapsible. It is a plus when frogging, but a compromise when scooping the last fish out of a fish tank. I have added a rigid plastic tube to strengthen the leading edge.

Love it, now if only the fishes would bite.

This is very flimsy. Folds up if you hold it the wrong way. It works, but don't use it if you have access to a fixed net.

Love the product as it is everything I need. Only down fall is the plastic to tighten the pole is plastic and was split before I even tried to set it up. Very discouraging. Not worth trying to send it back as Amazon customer service is too hard on the head.

We have chickens, guinea fowl, and ducks. Sometimes, we need to catch some birds, for whatever reason. We recently visited another farm to purchase some guineas, and the seller used a net very much like this one to catch the fowl. I was impressed with the performance of the net - he just reached out to the bird he wanted, flipped the net, and pulled the bird back to him. Some skill is needed, but the net beats every method I have ever seen for catching birds. This net isn't exactly the same as his, but it's very close. It's large enough to trap any bird I'll ever raise. No ostrich or emu here. It's more than strong enough to hold a bird once trapped. I like that the leading edge has no metal across it, instead, it has a nylon cord running between the metal sides. An overly enthusiastic grandchild isn't likely to clobber a delicate bird if his reach is short. This aluminum and nylon construction is unlikely to corrode or to rot. I expect this net to last a long time. And, if it doesn't, it is priced so that I'll be willing to buy another. The only down side I see, it is somewhat awkward to fold and unfold, until you've done it a couple times. Third time around, it's no problem at all. Of course, I won't be collapsing it very often. It has a resting place on the rafters of the chicken coop, where it can stay ready for use.

Perhaps it's not fair to give a poor review when I wasn't using this net for its intended purpose, but several reviews mentioned that this net works for chicken wrangling, which was why I bought it. I should have paid more attention to the reviews that mentioned the handle breaking. My rooster hit the net with the force of a bowling ball and the handle couldn't take the strain. The net itself is good and deep, with close-spaced mesh, so the rooster wasn't injured. Apart from the handle the main disadvantage to this net is that it's so big that it gets caught in bushes and is hard to use in tight spaces. If I need to buy a replacement I'll look for a smaller net with close-spaced mesh and a sturdier handle.

Very large capacity in its mouth that can fit in very large fish and very large cats. It's best to drag your cats when you use the net them instead of trying to lift them up so that you can extend the life of your pole net. The same thing goes for catching big fish in that it's best to pull up the fish instead of trying to lift it up to a horizontal position with your pole net so that you can extend its life.

I was concerned that there was not a way to "trap" to bat once I had swiped. Not sure yet because I haven't had a chance to try.

I had an issue with a stray cat getting inside my home when I'd leave the door cracked for my indoor/outdoor cat. It was infuriating me! I locked her inside and it was game time! It was a NIGHTMARE! But I corner her in the bathroom and slammed the net over her and thank God the net was so deep I was able to twist it so she couldn't get out. 10/10 highly recommend! This cat was a huge nuisance for over a year!! She was relocated.
