These are great speakers and subs. You really need the projector to get the full functionality out of this thing, but I love that it’s all wireless. Such a cool setup.
The sound from this system is absolutely amazing. Surround sound is addictive, the kind of thing that once you have it you’ll always want it. This wireless design is very clever and very effective. With the 4 speakers and 2 subwoofers you are definitely getting an amazing sound experience. The technology is a little beyond my grasp, but their frequency hopping is designed to prevent Wi-Fi interference with your home Wi-Fi. Not sure how that works, but it appears to, as I had no issues. The units themselves are very elegant. No fake plastic wood veneer, just a clean modern appearance. The sound quality is pretty amazing, and even in a larger room there’s plenty of power. The remote control is a nice feature and the functionality works very well. It’s clear that a lot of engineering went into this design
it is an amazing dound quality
I am a happy customer, very nice
I just received my thunderbeat speakers and they sound amazing.I had a small hiccup during my setup and called for help. The customer service is more than amazing, I spoke with Adam and after patiently listening to my problem, immediately jumped into trouble shooting mode. He walked me through step by step instructions until my set up was complete.I know this sounds more like a customer support review instead of a speaker review but that just how impressed I was with Adam. The speakers are amazing now that it's up and running properly. This system replaced my Bose lifestyle system and to be honest I will not go back to Bose. Another thing that makes this system awesome it the wireless feature. I no longer have to worry about trip hazards or hiding places, just plug and go.
One of the satellite speakers would not power on. The company representative made me feel that there was no way one of their products had a problem working
I've thought long and hard about this review because I really wanted to love these speakers, but you can get a lot more bang for your buck from a lot of other systems. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot to like about these speakers, and if this set, which doesn't come with a center-channel speaker unless you buy one of their expensive projectors (a device I will never own, period), were selling for closer to $500-$700 I'd be much more forgiving with my expectations.I'm trying these speakers as a replacement for a 30+ year old Bose Acoustimass 5.1 system I've had mounted in the ceiling powered by a Denon AVR-S700W receiver. I've wondered for a while if 30+ years of time could produce speakers better than these Bose which have been fantastic, where the receiver is actually the weak spot.In short, this speaker system can't compete with my old setup. The only category it wins in is surround sound. It has noticeably better separation than my old setup, but I have the virtual surround on these AWOL speakers and never used it with the Denon. Here's a breakdown of my thoughts.I'll start with the good:1) Setup. All you have to do is place the 4 small speakers in your room according to the diagram on the bottom of each speaker and plug it into an outlet or power strip, do the same with the 2 subwoofers, plug the dongle into your TV's (or projector if you've decided to lock yourself into their ecosystem) HDMI ARC or eARC port and wait for the speakers to pair an connect.2) Surround. This speaker system was clearly built for movies and television shows in mind, not so much music. It has great surround separation and supports multiple surround audio formats.3) Bass. If you like bass, the dual powered subwoofers in this ThunderBeat 4.2.2 system have the power to punch. You can adjust bass and treble with the included remote and it should provide enough bass for all but the most hardcore bass enthusiasts. And now the not-so-good:1) Controls. The audio controls for these speakers are shockingly limited. The tiny remote has a tiny, one line display and you can really only adjust bass, treble, surround, and pick from some pre-set audio profiles. There is no equalizer nor is there the ability to adjust the parameters of individual speakers.2) No App. This ties in with #1 and I'm honestly shocked there's no app for this speaker system, nothing on-screen and no phone app. Yes, they have an app, but it's for the projectors. If you're like most of us and use a TV you're out of luck.3) Build Quality. For twenty five hundred dollars I did not expect plastic. For twenty five hundred dollars I expected wood or some engineered material that was more durable than plastic. I'm not generally opposed to plastic speakers, but for twenty five hundred dollars I am.4) Few Accessories. Besides the essentials of speakers and dongle, there's a few cables like an HDMI extender that's truly handy and a couple of audio cables for use with other types of connections, but those connections will leave you with only stereo sound. There's also some very rudimentary wall-mount brackets that are tiny and mounting a speaker that has a power cable dangling down from it on the wall is horrendously ugly. For the price, they should've included 4 speaker stands to mount the speakers at a proper height and hide the wires. Instead, you'll have to shell out even more money.5) Attempting to Lock Customers Into Ecosystem. I mentioned earlier that there's no true center channel option with this speaker system unless you buy one of their very expensive projectors that has (surprise!) a speaker built into it. If you're using a TV like basically everyone the center channel audio goes through both left and right front speakers and sounds a little odd. I guess it's because of the speaker separation, but having such non-location-specific sounding vocals takes some getting used to when you've spent 3 decades with a proper center channel.6) Sound Quality. These speakers are good, but they're not great. They can't hold a candle to my old speakers and I've heard far less expensive systems that sound richer. The sound is a little flat on occasion and without a proper graphical equalizer there's little the user can do to compensate for it. But for $2500 you SHOULDN'T HAVE TO.7) Volume (or Lack Thereof). It just doesn't get very loud. It's weird, because the volume doesn't seem linear at all. When I turn up the volume to 25% that's about half as loud as it gets. It continues to go up decently until about 50% and then from that point to 100% there's barely any noticeable change in volume! We had it cranked all the way up and it wasn't as loud as my old Bose/Denon setup gets at 33%. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to damage my hearing, but this ThunderBeat system doesn't have much thunder and at max volume isn't as loud as we usually have the old system when watching movies. (It bears mentioning that I tried the speakers with 2 different TVs and a laptop, and every time the volume was weaker than it should be.)I wish the good outweighed the bad, but I have to compare the AWOL ThunderBeat 4.2.2 system not only to my current system, but against the asking price. Even if the price were $500 it wouldn't make it sound better, but it would excuse the many shortcomings this system has.Outside of the weakness of maximum volume, I'd say the thing that bothers me the most is AWOL's obvious attempt to corral customers into their ecosystem, and only their ecosystem. If they were really selling an "open" speaker system they would offer a physical center-channel speaker for purchase or at the very least support the use of a powered 3rd-party speaker, but they don't, even though they could. They come out of nowhere and start charging prices that would water the eyes of someone used to buying established brands with a proven track record. That's like trying to declare yourself the winner before you've even joined a race that's already started. I admire the confidence, but it's misplaced and they've got a lot of work to do. Work on those prices, work on being more adaptable to other setups since I don't thing projection TV is really going to catch on for home use, and in the not so distant future in commercial use, either, as screen tech gets cheaper, better, and bigger by the day. Oh, and work on that VOLUME!
Difficult to set up, and the middle front speaker aka the projector, sounds hollow and cheap compared to the rest of the speakers. (Which you need for all the sounds to work "right").Certain sounds and frequencies come out crackling. Awol vision has asked for a recording. But I've been unable to get it recorded as it's random and doesn't show up on the recording.I wasted a ton of time getting it to what I think is right because the awol vision video that shows the set up is out dated. The settings on the sound system are different than what the show you is what I'm saying. Get it for less than a 1000 if you can. Otherwise dont bother. Wish I could get a partial refund for my wasted time. I spent days on this thing like an idiot.
